California Fishing Guide ultra Light Surf-Fishing Setup Malibu, California
Ultra Light Surf Zone setup

When ultra light surf-fishing there is 6 key things you will need.

1. A good fishing reel that will balance your rod and reel combo. To big of a reel and it will throw the balance and feel of your rod and reel combo off and you wont feel the bite. Smaller is always better when it comes to reels.

For spinning reels to keep birds nest or line twist under control use low memory monofilament line.  It’s the only line I put on my spinning reels because it works.

2.When it comes to rods just make sure you balance the reel to the fishing rod. Other than that any rod and reel combo will work, from 5’ trout outfit with 4lbs. Test. Or like rod in the picture that rod length is 9’-6”. The longer length of rod will aid in a longer distant cast. However most of your fishing will be inside the surf zone so just use what you own then after few Surf-fishing trips you will know what will work for you.

3.Weight is used to load a fishing rod to cast out your bait or lure like a slingshot. There are many types of sinkers on the market that will anchor in the sand for bait surf-fishermen. However for ultra light surf-fishing bullet or egg sinkers seem to work better for retrieving lures and bait slowly in the surf zone.

4 To stay dry and warm or wish to move to one spot to the next waders are the way to go. Windy days and in cooler water waders will give you more time in the water and keep you comfortable. To move from one spot to the next just slip out of your waders put them in a plastic bag to keep sand out of your car and move to the next spot.

5.The Fishing Creel is back and better than before! I have found the Albackore Fishing Creel to have insert bag with a cooler like lining to keep my bait and fish cool with a small blue ice. The outer bag holds all my other gear and a bottle of water.

6.A net is a must, you never know what’s going to take your bait or lure and you might just wish you had a net.
